Long Island Clinical Social Worker

Joan Salmon, LCSW

Throughout my life I realized that there were experience in people’s lives that had the ability to change their future.  I decided to change career paths and return to school to become a social worker so that I could help individuals and families have positive outcomes.  I received my Masters in Social Work from Fordham University in 2015 and I am licensed in NYS as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).   My work has focused on helping treat children, adolescents, and families improve the quality of their lives by guiding them through the process of understanding how our relationships are constantly teaching and challenging us.  Early in our lives, we learn certain patterns of thinking, feeling and acting to help us cope with situations.  As we get older, sometimes we find that these patterns may not fit our current circumstance and can cause trouble in our relationships.

I have found a passion for working with women and families in the area of perinatal and parental mental health.  My vision is for all women and mothers (and fathers) to feel worthy of mental health treatment without fear or judgement. Individuals have unique needs based on what stage of life they are in. Whether you are living child free, preconception, pregnant, postpartum, parenting or "empty nesting", I have the expertise to work through the issues that present during these time periods.  My training has put me in a unique position to be able to help you navigate these transitions with compassion and empathy.   For example, sometimes having a baby is a huge shock and many people struggle to talk about this in a deep and meaningful way. The so called “fourth” trimester (the first 3 months of a newborns life) can be a time when you feel overwhelmed, question your ability and identity, and feel like you’re in over your head.  I can help you navigate these emotions, gain an improved understanding of your new role, and help you to establish/improve your self-worth and confidence in your role as a new parent.

Through the use of individual and/or group psychotherapy we will work together to identify patterns of thinking and behaviors, understand the root cause of these, and learn alternatives that can lead to healthy change, improved confidence, an improved outlook on life.
